What is your definition of peace? Is peace the absence of the storm or is it the stillness or calmness in the storm? Imagine this, 13 people are sailing in the boat, suddenly the weather changes. The waves get larger and stronger. They cause the boat to rock from side to side, move up and down. Water enters the boat, causing palpitations, the reality of capsizing and the possibility of drowning seems more real in that moment. Then, all of a sudden, in the corner of your eye, something strange captures your attention…. Someone is sleeping in the middle of the chaos? Like, REALLY….!!!???? So , someone wakes Him up in a moment of fear of perishing. Guess what, He asks ‘ Why are you afraid , O you little of faith’. Something even more baffling is, He calms the storm…. Do you know who He is? Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Why did He react like this? What prompted His response?
This concept comes from Matthew 8: 23 – 27. Why did Jesus react this way?
More often than not, we let challenges define who we are, our attitudes and outlook of life. A storm is a temporary situation that causes major challenges in your life. Anything that really can turn your world upside down. The truth is, we can let these temporary moments define us if we are not careful.
A storm is calmest at its center – the eye of the storm. Even in the midst of chaos, there is an area of total stillness at the centre….. hmmmm
Storms can serve as distractions in our lives. They tend to shift the focus away from God towards the chaos. They are a source of fear and insecurity. Yet, for Jesus, He was not even bothered while the disciples thought that their lives were hanging by a thread. What was the real issue here? Why was He so calm in the midst of a storm? This can be summed up in one word IDENTITY. Jesus is God. He has power over the storms. The disciples in a moment forgot who He is, and that they were in the same boat with God. As long as He is with you, no harm will come to you. They let the outside environment distort their perspectives and ultimately, distract them from the truth, that if you are with Jesus, you can smile at the storm, because you know who He is and whose you are. The storm can be a distraction from the truth. You can easily let it distract you and let a temporary situation give you a false reality and make you even question the love of God or worse still, let fear get rooted in your life. I will pose the question to you again. What is your definition of peace? Is it the abscence of a storm or is it the stillness or calmness in the midst of the storm?
Even as you enter 2018, remember who you are and whose you are. Happy new year to all.
